Country music was first developed in the late 1910's in the State of Tennessee. The first big country music singer was Jimmie Rodgers with his top-selling song "Blue Yodel #1. The term country music gained popularity in the 1940's in preference to the term "hillbilly music", with "country music" being used today to describe the many styles and subgenres. It also encompasses western music that evolved parallel with hillbilly music with similar roots.
